COVINGTON COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: PERS Board Approves Regulation Allowing Retirees to Serve in Legislature and Draw Benefits

Covington County Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Dec. 28.

The Public Employees’ Retirement System of Mississippi (PERS) Board met Tuesday afternoon and approved revisions to Regulation 34, Reemployment after Retirement, which will allow state retirees to serve in the Mississippi Legislature and draw their retirement benefits. The board’s action followed the recommendation and action of its Administrative Committee earlier that day. During that committee meeting, PERS staff explained that while the IRS has not issued an official, written ruling to PERS confirming the revised regulation complies with IRS requirements for maintaining the system’s qualified tax status, IRS staff notified PERS via a phone call last Thursday evening that the agency plans to approve the revisions. Tuesday was a historic day for Mississippi public retirees, as these revisions and the board’s vote will allow retirees, including educators, to serve in the Mississippi Legislature and draw their retirement.
